the trolls who've been hounding you

[edit]

crack me up. Every once in a while I peek at reverts on your page and others, just to see what they've been up to. This morning I learned that homosexuality is "a drain on the population". Oh no! Quick, I've got to make more kids to cover up for you! --Woggly 07:12, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, that one was lots of fun. On the bright side, they seemed to be implying that I was Keanu Reeves and J. K. Rowling (and less flatteringly that I was petroleum), so it wasn't all bad. Good to see you back and editing again by the way. --fvw* 07:17, 2005 Jan 4 (UTC)

thereby stimulating the following dialog:

My apologies if my comment on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/667 Dark Avenue caused offence, however it was merely a parody of something that was on the subject page at the time. --fvw* 18:12, 2005 Jan 3 (UTC)

Ah, tnx, that goes enormously toward restoring my opinion of you as a colleague. And perhaps i should have looked at the history before considering exactly what interim remedy to apply.
On the other hand, i assume you've learned the lesson of not assuming the context will be stable. And at the risk of preaching (and maybe even preaching to the choir), i'm deputizing myself to make the points to you that
  • WP, tho a volunteer activity, sets a standard of collegiality comparable to professional and academic ones.
  • WP is firmly committed to a very high level of inclusiveness, precluding behavior that invites any inference of dispensing :with respectful communication.
  • Emotive language is not "just words", i.e., its purpose and effect are only secondarily the explicit conveying of information.
  • In practice (whatever the proper status of theories of "oppressed groups" may be), to the degree that calling a group "oppressed" escapes universal derision ("Oppressed American millionaire"? Liberate this, fat-cat!), many of the group's members react involuntarily, to what appears to them to be disrespect based on membership in that group, as they would to organized oppression, and they are done real harm by that appearance.
  • Thus "gayyy" and, say, "niggerish", are words that should (occasionally be discussed but) never be applied at WP, however satirical the intent.
Of course in the long term you are much more able than i to express your real intent. I saw quick amelioration as mandatory, and the intent of my edit was that, not contributing to the discussion at hand or making any point of independent importance. Thus i would welcome your rewrite of your original vote (eliminating my contribution completely if that is acceptable to you). (In such situations, my preferred documentation measure is modifying the sig-line into one dated like
16:18, 2005 Jan 2 (UTC) & 20:04, 2005 Jan 3 (UTC)
(taking advantage of 5 tildes rendering as just a time stamp w/o any user link), tho i don't claim there's any clear policy calling for the double timestamp.)
Thank you for your quick and responsible reply to my action, and thank you in advance for your attention to this as well.
Jerzy(t) 20:04, 2005 Jan 3 (UTC)
I disagree, I think as long as terms like gayyy are used they're valid targets for parody, and I think the context, even with the comment removed from the subject page, were sufficient to indicate it was intended as that. But if the current version makes you happy, that's fine by me. I'll just leave the comment as it is now. ----fvw* 20:33, 2005 Jan 3 (UTC)
Irony (of which parody is one form) is a dangerous tool beyond the bounds of those who know you well enough to pick up your real intent, and WP is certainly beyond those bounds.
Moreover, contrary to your suggestion, context is crucial for parody to work. Swift's Modest Proposal is such a classic because so many of its audience couldn't grasp the context and for them it failed as parody; its success was not in communicating to its readers. The comfortable readers who failed to perceive it as a parody are the ones who make it famous: that failure showed those who did understood it, better than their reading of the parody did, how deserving of ridicule those morally comfortable ones were. "Dying is easy; comedy is hard."
But let's get clear about your parody:
  • 667 Dark Avenue was VfD-ed.
  • Edits started coming at the rate of two per hour for the next four hours (including an edit deleted as vandalism after 3 minutes).
  • An IP, who had not edited the article before (tho they had an IP close to that of the creator), added "GAYYYYYYYYYY" under "==External links==". (Which suggests to me it came from a critic of 667, who is likely to agree with you that the 667 article is not worthy of retention.)
  • You decide, 33 minutes later, that imitating an apparent critic of 667 (not someone who said, e.g., that 667 is valuable via making readers aware of what is GAYYYYYYYYYY and what is cool) by calling 667 "GAYYYYY" was a useful, or at least clever, comment, in support of your del vote.
  • BTW, the context of your VfD edit disappeared (utterly predictably, IMO) after another 27 minutes.
  • You explain your intent as parodying the use of "GAYYYYYYYYYY". That seems odd, if parody indeed is "imitation of style" for "humor or to ridicule": did you think the personal attack you imitated, on those whose site you were criticizing, was something to joke about? Or were you for some reason seeking to ridicule others taking the same position as you, and whose personal attack you did not otherwise criticize?
At the bottom line, i think
  • you misjudge what expressions are acceptable media for parody at WP: terms of abuse that focus on sensitive groups are far too dangerous for that.
  • this particular "parody" raises for me a serious question about your skill at that rhetorical device, so that i hope you will give serious thought to whether wisdom bids you completely avoid parody here, and perhaps irony as a whole.
In any case, this bodes well by continuing gratifyingly civil. Thanks.

Adminship

If you are interested then I will nominate you for adminship :). Thue | talk 22:58, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)

  • I would suggest caution in this regard. The recent exchange with Mr Avenger seems to indicate that FVW may not be a suitable candidate. - Robert the Bruce 23:17, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Heya, thanks for the offer! I fear SWAdair had beaten you to it via E-mail though, but the offer of nominating still means a lot to me. --fvw* 10:19, 2005 Jan 5 (UTC)
Yes, that was a spelling error (really!). I just saw it and corrected it at once, hoping earnestly no one had seen it. Then I saw the message at my talk page. Oh well :/. Thue | talk 15:54, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

Sadly you failed to follow up at all. I did check the facts and in fact found that your edit was token and you have failed to address the direct personal attacks on his user page and mine. This sadly is further evidence of your non-suitability for the appointment as sysop. ...added anonymously by Robert the Bruce on 5 Jan '04

I didn't look through this whole saga, but I did look at Fvw's change. It was very well judged, I thought, accompanied with a suitable warning. I don't understand how Fvw was under any obligation to address "direct personal attacks" anywhere. His time was and is limited, and he wasn't and isn't receiving pay. Contrary to what you say, Fvw strikes me as a patient, hard-working, and sensible person, tending to dismiss trolls as negligible pests rather than flattering their desire for attention by expressing well-deserved contempt. He has my whole-hearted vote for administrator. Hoary 14:11, 2005 Jan 5 (UTC)
Two points. One, when I talk about "I" and give the URL of my user page surely only someone attempting to make the most silly of points will claim an attempt to post anonymously? Two, I'm sure your Fvw is able to answer himself? The reason he doesn't is because now there is evidence that he is biased. Certainly a flaw that would make it unwise to appoint him as an administrator? - Robert the Bruce 02:54, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Your first point: No. Your second: (i) "My" Fvw? (ii) Yes, he could have answered himself, but I speculate that he was already too bored to do so. In his place, I certainly would have been too bored to do so. And no, I see no flaw that would make it unwise to appoint him an administrator; if you see such a flaw, you are of course free to vote accordingly. Hoary 03:26, 2005 Jan 6 (UTC)
  • Still have the need to speak for him I see. Sad. Why not encourage him to speak for humself? Or ... will you be speaking for him when he is an admin one day? - Robert the Bruce 04:56, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Admin nomination

[edit]

I obviously believe you are good admin material. I have nominated you for adminship. Please edit Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Fvw2 to indicate your acceptance. You have my vote. SWAdair | Talk 05:32, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Dates

[edit]

Thanks for your comments on my talk page. I have been de-linking duplicate year dates for events/births/deaths as it seems to be general Wikipedia policy to try not to duplicate wiki links where possible. Many years were already de-linked before I started. It probably makes sense not to provide a wiki link for the same year when there is already a link provided for it. TonyW 11:38, Jan 6, 2005 (UTC)

Restoration comedy

[edit]

Uh, could you say that again more slowly, please? I should make sure I what when I what?--Bishonen | Talk 12:34, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I'm afraid the confusion is entirely mutual, I don't recall ever having raised the topic of Restoration comedy with you, though I suppose I could nonetheless inform you you should make sure you look both ways when crossing the road.
Clarifying the only comment I've made to you recently (see comment titled "Thanks" three headers up), I was thanking your for fixing the ofcourse I wrote on my RfA. --fvw* 14:05, 2005 Jan 6 (UTC)

Restoration comedy II

[edit]

Sorry about that, Frank. No, I did get the ofcourse thing (how could you?). I was referring to a conversation we had—well, I thought we had it, but I guess you meant to be talking to Ta bu shi da yu. It was on his/her page, and went like this:

Hey, Ta bu shi da yu, don't even try to rollback or edit Restoration comedy, you'd be zapping legit edits that don't show up in History. Sheesh, I hope it's not on the latest vandalism when my mom reads it. See irc.--Bishonen | Talk 02:46, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Database replication is broken, or slowed, or whatever. It's not Restoration comedy specifically, it's all wikipedia editing. Some edits show up in watchlists only, some in histories only, some on the page and in the history but not in the diffs... it seems random. Oh, and I saw several bona fide edits to Rc in the History before, that I don't see now. So, in other words, it's kind of dangerouos to edit and more dangerous to revert. Sheesh. At this moment though, if I click through from the Main page, I see a good version of the article. I'm not at work myself, as it's 4:30 AM here...yawn... gnight, thanks for watching the article, but I guess there's not a lot to be done right now. I hope all the vandals are tired out after the vandalstorm that hit yesterday's Featured article (as fully expected).--Bishonen | Talk 03:32, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Actually you can usually get to the most recent edit with a few page reloads, make sure you append ?action=purge though, to prevent cached query results being used in generating the page. --fvw* 03:43, 2005 Jan 6 (UTC)

See, Restoration comedy is on the Main Page today. It was getting vandalised through the night, which I understand is the standard effect of that honor, and at the same time there was a big database replication fubar going on, with lots of edits not showing up, or only showing up in some places, so it was kind of dodgy for the people watching it. I was watching it because I wrote it [modest smirk], and Ta bu shi was watching it on general helpfulness principles. His/her replies to the above are on my page. So. Anyway. I thought you were telling me there was a way of getting missing edits to show up? It didn't sound like that from the guys on IRC, they were more councelling patience and minimal interference. Ta bu shi locked the article for few hours. I meant to ask you if you meant a special trick. Maybe you hadn't heard about the replication issues and meant something else. Anyway, sorry for the confusion (quite rich and varied, isn't it?).--Bishonen | Talk 14:49, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)

VFD/MSTECHTV

[edit]

The current article has much factual information about the MSTECHTV rumor. The current article explains the chronology of the rumor well, as well as the sources of the rumor. I created the article in hopes for the next person who searches Wikipedia for it to come across and say, "Oh... it was just a silly little post on G4's forums that made that up. I can't take it seriously". It would sure help us over on the G4 boards. --Mrmiscellanious 15:57, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)

curious why you changed this name on VFD to use coding for the special characters. your way, the vfd page cannot be accessed in my browser (netscape). does lack of the coding cause a similar problem for you? Michael Ward 19:51, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Oh, I hadn't noticed that. I didn't actually change it, my browser did. I suspect the original VfD name contained non-ISO-8859-1 characters. The english wikipedia is in the ISO-8859-1 character encoding, but due to bugs some browsers will let you submit invalid characters. My browser refused to send invalid data when I submitted my VfDs, so it tried to change the text into the closest valid thing in ISO-8859-1, which obviously didn't work too well. If you could give me a link to the page in question or its VfD I'll see if I can fix it up. --fvw* 19:59, 2005 Jan 6 (UTC)
Thanks. I changed it back [1]. I've seen this type of thing happen 3 or 4 times before on VFD, so I was just wondering about it. Michael Ward 20:08, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
That's not much help I'm afraid, as the next time I or someone else with a strict browser comes by it'll be mutilated back into valid ISO-8859-1. The only solution is to not use invalid characters in titles: I've moved it off now and changed the include, all should be well now. --fvw* 20:13, 2005 Jan 6 (UTC)

Jew

[edit]

Hi Fvw, I'm wondering what you feel is wrong with the external link that you deleted at Jew. I had a look at it, and it seems to be a footnoted column in a reputable publication written by a doctor of law, who did his M.A. in Middle East studies; and so, regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with it, it seems (to me) to be an acceptable Wikipedia source. Did you feel otherwise? SlimVirgin 01:22, Jan 11, 2005 (UTC)

I've had a look at the site and you're right, it is a proper external link. I'm not sure whether Jew is the best place for it, but I'll leave that to the people involved with the page to decide. I just saw an external link being inserted at the top of the list with an incorrect header and the word editorial in the title; usually that adds up to random rant by POV-pusher, but it appears I was too hasty this time; I've restored it and fixed up, thanks for keeping an eye out! --fvw* 01:30, 2005 Jan 11 (UTC)

Reversions

[edit]

Please explain your edits in edit summaries. You reverted an edit to Michel Foucault but you didn't say why. Okay, neither did the editor who made the edit you reverted, but if you want to be an admin you should be an exemplar. Frankly (NPI), the link wasn't much use and added nothing to the article. The bibliographies it gave are much better covered at one of the other links. Did you check? Or did you just revert without looking at the links? This is the sort of thing I worry about with you. Even on RC patrol you need to take a bit of care. You also left a message suggesting that the user had made a test. This is not appropriate. I suppose it's the "slapping" you are talking about. Why not ask why the user made the change? You could still revert and if the user did not make a cogent reply, what harm has been done? It will have taken you thirty seconds to ask why he made the change instead of smacking down the template that you used.Dr Zen 07:21, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Move over redirect?

[edit]

On WP:RCP, you wrote "anyone can move articles over a simple redirect with no edit history, I've moved it back." I've seen this kind of comment before, but I don't understand it. As far as I can tell, you have to be an admin to move a page over another page, even one that has no history. (But obviously there's something I'm missing, because you're not an admin yet!) Thus, I've been listing cases like that on WP:RM.  ? Dbenbenn 15:04, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Nope, a redirect without further content and without history (or perhaps only one that's been created by a page move, I've never tried it for other cases) can be overwritten. You just do a simple move as if the redirect wasn't there and it works. --fvw* 15:49, 2005 Jan 11 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. I should have read more carefully: "unless it is a redirect to the old title and has no past edit history". What I tried before was a move over a page that redirected to a third page. Dbenbenn 16:51, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Question about all the Vandalism on your page

[edit]

Hello, Fvw, I'm new here but as I was wandering about I noticed that your user page is a frequent target of vandalism. Is there a reason why? Did you edit someone's article and they didnt like it? Not trying to pry.. just curious.. you seem like a cool guy. :)--Stormwolf 10:53, Jan 12, 2005 (UTC)

The reason for the frequent vandalism of my talk page is that I tend to do a lot of RC patrolling, which means vandals and the like generally run into me or others doing RC patrol, as opposed to those who spend most of their time improving articles. And sadly vandals don't react to their vandalism being removed by thanking those responsible, so my user page occasionally ends up being vandalised. I don't really mind though, vandalism of my user page is easy to find and revert whereas vandalism to other pages could go unnoticed for a long time and could actually harm the project. Also, I tend to see getting my user page vandalised as a sign I'm still doing a good job :-). --fvw* 12:53, 2005 Jan 12 (UTC)
Thanks for the welcome and congratulations on your recent adminship!--Stormwolf 16:53, Jan 12, 2005 (UTC)

Heya. I didn't chose to delete it, I merely put it up for community voting on the matter (which by the looks of it isn't going to end up in it getting deleted, so don't worry about it too much). I read the article before putting it up for voting for deletion of course, could you clarify which of her accomplishments you feel make her notable enough for inclusion in an encyclopaedia? --fvw* 20:50, 2005 Jan 14 (UTC)

Re: Adminship

[edit]

I'm honoured to hear you would be willing to nominate me for adminship. Please, go ahead and do so! I'm not worried about opposing votes cast because who my nominator is; I would propably get some opposition even when self-nominating due to my opinions about deletion/inclusion, given the current political climate in RfA.

Oh, and congratulations about passing your own nomination! I admire the zeal you have shown when keeping Wikipedia free of garbage. Extra thanks for processing (most) of the backlog of CSD's I tagged yesterday. It seemed that for nearly half a day I was the only one filtering the "sdfsdfgh"-pages in RC patrol. jni 10:15, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Uh-oh -- JPE is back

[edit]

Or anyway 81.86.68.162 is having more fun than any one user deserves -- on the talk page of the article on one of Philadelphia's less noteworthy exports. I'd get ready to slap a protect thingie on the article. -- Hoary 15:04, 2005 Jan 13 (UTC)

Sorry, my wikipediation was rudely interrupted by real life and so I wasn't around. The IP you linked appears to be a sollog puppet though, did you perhaps copy and paste the wrong thing? --fvw* 21:07, 2005 Jan 14 (UTC)

country infoboxes

[edit]

Hi, there's a new Solution E that's been proposed for the country infoboxes; I've changed my vote from the Solution D that I proposed, earlier. The new option, proposed by User:Zocky, transcludes a subpage instead of using the template mechanism for this.

See: Nepal's infobox is implemented at Nepal/infobox using Template:Infobox_Country; Tuvalu's is implemented at Tuvalu/infobox as a wiki table.

Discussion is at: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Countries

voting: Wikipedia:Country_infobox_vote

Thanks. — Davenbelle 02:18, Jan 14, 2005 (UTC)

I got around to posting on the admin noticeboard before getting your question on my talk page. My explanation can be found there. 172 22:32, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Year

[edit]

Heh, no worries. :-) I caught myself writing 2002 the other day....no idea why. I'm not familiar with the candidate enough to vote, but I personally took the date, not as an error on your part, but as an indication of your extreme confidence in them, to the point that you were willing to send them back in time in order to give us an additional year of their work as an admin. ;-) Have a great day, Jwrosenzweig 22:45, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Congratulations!

I'm happy that the sysop vote went your way. I wish I'd noticed that the vote was taking place so I could have added a "YES!" but it seems you didn't need it. Joyous 00:28, Jan 15, 2005 (UTC)

Hiya!

How do you start a disambiguation page?

[edit]

i am tryitng to make a pgae but dj will not good it. i noticed that you are important here, you are an syspos so i need tyou to make the page called":nigger antics and say how it is what blauck randy moss does

Frank, you have my sympathies. Being a vandal-hunting admin is a thankless job. Are you sure you wouldn't rather mediate disputes? :-) Ah, who am I kidding. You probably live for this, right? JRM 03:45, 2005 Jan 17 (UTC)
Actually, I did offer my services to the MedCom, but by the looks of it they're going to politely decline. But yes, this does constitute a mildly entertaining evening on wikipedia by my books, much more pleasant than the usual barrage of POV-pushers. --fvw* 03:50, 2005 Jan 17 (UTC)

I'm not sure whether the deletion and blank-protection of American Nihilist Underground Society was a good idea or not, but if it stands, it would be wise to do the same to anus.com (which was the formerly-deleted article anyway). —Korath (Talk) 03:40, Jan 17, 2005 (UTC)

On it, thanks. The way I see it, if American ... shouldn't have been speedy deleted, it should be undeleted (instead of recreated), which will need an admin anyway, so we might as well prevent recreation while we're at it. --fvw* 03:43, 2005 Jan 17 (UTC)

Never mind, seems you saw it too. :) —Korath (Talk) 03:41, Jan 17, 2005 (UTC)

On a related note, User:Tom19922 has copied your user page. I'm not sure if there's a precedent for this; just thought you should know... -leigh (φθόγγος) 04:22, Jan 17, 2005 (UTC)

Ooh, well you know what they say about imitation. Either it's the sincerest form of flattery or it breeds contempt, I always forget which. Thanks for letting me know. --fvw* 04:25, 2005 Jan 17 (UTC)

Read the talk page? That's your comment? I wrote at least 50% of that 14,000 word monster... As for consensus, you can see what my opinion on that is. But hey, if you want to encourage the premise that might makes right, that a POV group of editors can disregard constructive dialog and shout down someone who dares disagree with them, feel free. Supercool Dude

[edit]

Hi!,

A number of people keep vandalising my articles in spite of the fact they are true. This is vicious and malicious and bad for Wikipedia.

Who is an authority that I can talk to about the vandalism?

A number of these individuals have made personal attacks on me also.

Supercool Dude 11:15, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

  1. They aren't your articles, they are articles you've edited. That doesn't give you any more say in what happens with them.
  2. Try discussing (and giving references for) your claims on talk pages.
  3. Stop your personal attacks and maybe others will be nicer to you as well.
  4. Read Wikipedia:Wikiquette, and Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines and Wikipedia:Style and How-to Directory.
