Could we add pictures of the artists being discussed? Without that, it feels quite bland. JTWikiEdu (talk) 15:05, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps we should find out what the Talk page is for before copying the entire article into it? -- John Owens 00:51 Apr 2, 2003 (UTC)

I removed some of the sample styles for inaccuracy. Zouglou, taarab and zouk are not styles of hip hop. Tuf-Kat 15:30, Apr 3, 2004 (UTC)

Isn't it funny that hip hop did not originate in Africa? Rather, it originated in the United States and then spread to Africa. Since hip hop supposedly originated as a form of Black music, one would logically think that it would be the other way around.

Hip hop did not originate as a form of "Black music", but was invented by African Americans. As a result, it is perfectly logical that it began in the US and then spread to the rest of the world. Tuf-Kat 02:44, Nov 13, 2004 (UTC)

Are we concerned about some of these bands just being spam and promotional links? --Knulclunk (talk) 05:52, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merging

[edit]

Suggested articles should not be merged this page. They don't meet WP:Merge conditions: They don't have duplicate or major overlapping content with this article, are expandable and are not minor subjects. Merging would also be severe promotion of regional bias. Julius Sahara (talk) 07:17, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, I'm sorry, i forgot to come back and create this discussion, when i added the merge tags i was on my way out. Anyway I'm have to say that you are wrong, they do meet several of the merge conditions, which by the way are not solid rules anyway. As i explained on my talk page, and have demonstrated on the pages you reverted, the individual countries, the articles as they were, were a mess of dead spam links of deleted articles, and original research for example (copied from my talk page)
First of all, on the Tanzanian hip hop page, there's the intro paragraph, which i merged, then there are several extr'Bold textemely unencyclopedic paragraphs on something called "bongo flava" (example sentence: Bongo Flava makes up its own rules and these guys don't need to copy their brothers in America, but have a sure clear sense of who they are and what sound it is they're making.) followed by some stuff about Tanzanian groups, which i also merged. Then we have South africa, a long long list if red links with about 6 legitimate links to south african hip hop artists. This is followed by a block of unref'd poorly written advertisement (example: Currently, South African hip hop is at a very exciting stage as it is begins to acquire its own musical style. In the same breath, individual provinces are developing their own styles of hip == hop.)
After removing most of the crap like this, there is very little left to the articles, which means they fall under the third point. Second, you seem to have misunderstood the second criteria. African hip hop and all these smaller articles do overlap. Each is about an African country's hip hop. They could quite easily be slotted into one larger africa page. they may also fall under the first point, not one of the articles suggests anyway in which Rwandan hip hop, for example, is any different from any other african countries. Also none of the articles met the standards for a halfway decent article, they were full of dead links, OR, spammishness, and were for the most part totally unsourced. Finally, i can assure you that in no way is this a case of regional bias, and i resent the insinuation. I chose Africa because the african country articles were the first ones i came across, i do intend to merge some of the other hip hop articles, provided consensus is achieved, to form European, Asian and maybe south American hip hop articles.--Jac16888 (talk) 13:28, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since no reply has been made to this in a few weeks, i have re-redirected the pages--Jac16888 (talk) 05:42, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Needs work

[edit]

This article has multiple issues, and needs some experienced WKP editors with some knowledge of the subject. I might put out a call at the Village Pump or somewhere. The opening sentence is misleading - it was not widespread American influence that kick-started local hip-hop artistes, it was the widespread influence of African American music and culture, rather a different thing. The second sentence is badly phrased - [1] is meaningless, hip-hop is not a man with a suitcase. Hip-hop had been heard in Senegal before 1985, perhaps the writer meant that the first local hip-hop artists were heard of in 1985.

It would be helpful to know how often the Guinean Africa Rap Festival is held.

I'm going to remove some of the more pointless and spammish comments that have been added, and correct some of the mixed up statements and poor grammar. I have removed the following inaccurate statement: [2] This article also needs updating as the African hip-hop scene has been evolving quite quickly. Finally, the article deals only with African hip-hop music, and not with any of the other aspects of hip-hop culture in Africa. Two mics. Centrepull (talk) 06:28, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

African Hip Hop, The Future?!

[edit]

Alot of African Hip Hop acts are Highly talented but none except for maybe K'naan have made waves internationally, what can be done to overcome this boundary?! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bigholsteez (talkcontribs) 08:23, 22 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

External Links: verification & relevance

[edit]

Some links were recently removed for being dead. Some for being for promotional. There are duplicates for example "africas gateway" under general links and some other external links point to resources that last saw updates up to 4 years ago. Surely more relevant links would be welcome. Perhaps someone is willing to have a look at this in depth.

Two53475 (talk) 12:52, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Saw no response here and have removed dead and mirror links from the general links section. There is a misleading link present in the form of "africahit.com", this site is an amalgam of soccer(football), politics and music. This isn't a Hip Hop site at it's core. I suggest removing it. Objections?

Your recent edits

[edit]

@Qaqaamba: I reverted one of the edits you made to the article because it negates the fact that Hip Hop started in the Bronx. There is absolutely nothing wrong with including this info. You do not have a valid reason to remove this info from the article and did not leave a valid reason in your edit summary. Also, you need to stop cluttering the article with inline citations. What you did in the street pop section isn't tidy. At the end of the last sentence, you have the citations listed like this---->[29][30][31][32][33][34] You need to visit the WP:CITEKILL article and read about citation overkill.  Versace1608  Wanna Talk? 15:02, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Add a citation at the end of the each sentence in the street pop section; do not add a whole bunch of inline citations at the end of the last sentence. Learn to do the right thing and learn to take advice. Do not be hellbent on doing things as you see fit.  Versace1608  Wanna Talk? 15:13, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Qaqaamba:. This is a response to the post that you removed. How the hell does acknowledging the origin of hip hop music "lack neutrality in tone"? You did not have a valid reason to remove that particular info and did not leave a valid reason in your edit summary. You claimed to be making minor copy edits to the lede when in fact your edits removed vital info from the lede. Like I said, add a reliable source to each sentence in the street pop section. It is sloppy to clutter the article with inline citations. You do not want to accept this fact. I will revert your edits if you restored the article to one of your previous revision. Report me if you disagree with me. You are not a team player and don't like taking corrections. You also never admit when you're wrong.  Versace1608  Wanna Talk? 15:23, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Versace1608. It's a pleasure to interact with you again. Given that you have been or are still monitoring my edits as per promised by you 2-3 months agp, it would be evident that I am the one who added the section and sentence concerning African origins I did not remove those words to "negate" as you suggested; rather, it was because it seemed to lack neutrality in tone. The first sentence in the lead already addresses the matter (the Bronx, origin), and repeating this information alongside scholarly arguments appeared biased and may suggest an agenda, particularly in favor of African hip hop. Additionally, paragraphs can also be appropriately cited at the end (WP:ILC - Inline citations are often placed at the end of a sentence or paragraph ). Aside from that, please refrain from engaging on my talk page. Thank you for your valued input, and happy editing Qaqaamba (talk) 15:24, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I removed it to be more tidy as I realized it appeared as a dup section as you already created one Qaqaamba (talk) 15:25, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am not monitoring your edits. I have had the African hip hop article on my watchlist long before you started editing it. I don't know how you've falsely concluded that I am monitoring you. You must really think that you are some kind of important figure for me to following. For your info, I have way better things to do than to follow you around. If it was left with me, the Afro fusion article you created would have been deleted. From interacting with you, I can confidently say that you do not like taking corrections and you never admit when you're wrong. Instead of trying to justify your inclusion of inline citations, you should have replace all the CN templates I added with reliable sources. I don't know how hard that can be.  Versace1608  Wanna Talk? 15:38, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hhhhmm, time for receipts fam, as per your own words "I will monitor all your edits moving forward" —"Versace1608 Wanna Talk? April 2024 (UTC)". Oh, imposing a negative dominance and invalidating - WP:PA, again? Interesting, lol. Stop foruming and topic-diverging the talk page, for God's sake. 🤣 Again, thank you for your guidance, I appreciate it. Qaqaamba (talk) 15:56, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
