JillandJack, why did you insert the "bias" template on this page? What is the problem? Adam Bishop 07:15, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

NPOV

[edit]

This is highly biased and has no references. The Chateau Clique were Scots and practiced Civil Law themselves. This shows a poor understanding of systems of private law.

First, the Château Clique was a lobby group.

  • Generally, they wanted the French Canadian majority of Lower Canada to assimilate to English culture. This included the abolition of the seigneurial system, replacing French civil law with British Common law,
    • Do encyclopedias give vague labels such as "generally" in place of facts?
    • Why did these business people want these changes?
  • and replacing the established Roman Catholic Church with the Anglican Church.
    • the Roman Catholic Church was the "established" Chutrch?
  • Their efforts lead to the Union Act, which ultimately failed to assimilate all French Canadians but succeeded in preventing their political and economic interest to prevail on that of Britain.
    • This is a derogatory, broad, and unsubstantiated generality.
  • His struggles against the Clique and the Lieutenant Governor, Lord Gosford, led to the Patriots Rebellion in 1837.
    • All by himself? No one else had issues?
  • While the English-speaking population became the majority, the British-appointed governors general still attempted to force the French Canadian population to assimilate.
    • They did? What about facts to support this assertion?

I have a possibly nitpicky question about James McGill - how is he a member of the Chateau clique, which "gained prominence after the War of 1812," when he died in 1813? (Ianvitro (talk) 03:38, 20 March 2008 (UTC))[reply]
