"An American Politician"

[edit]

Unnecessary, as it already says he was governor of Maryland in the United States.

"American" and "politican" are thus assumed and add to the article what is not needed. [[User:Tomf688|Tom]] 00:17, Oct 26, 2004 (UTC)

Maybe, instead of "American Politician of the Democratic Party", "member of the American Democratic Party" would also be more appropriate.
And finally, "U.S. state" (United States State) doesn't work too well, which is why I had it separated: "governor of the State of Maryland in the United States".[[User:Tomf688|Tom]] 00:32, Oct 26, 2004 (UTC)

Well, what I don't like is the way it just says Democratic Party and doesn't give the national context in the first sentence. Everyking 00:40, 26 Oct 2004 (UTC)

William Donald Schaefer (born November 2, 1921), a member of the American Democratic Party, has served in public office for 40 years at both the state and local level. He was the 58th governor of the State of Maryland in the United States from 1987 to 1995 and has been the State Comptroller of Maryland since 1999.
That seems to cover the bases.

Recent Controversies Section

[edit]

The source for Schaefer having written a note of apology to a young woman he had publicly leered at and (according to the present Wikipedia article) verbally harrassed is Los Angeles Times, Saturday February 18, 2006, p. A11. The brief Times article did not identify the young woman or mention that Schaefer had spoken to her. [18:10, 18 February 2006 24.24.171.157]

"Uncited quotes"

[edit]

I see a lot of quotes here which have no reference. For a guy whose been on the record for a lot of stupid things he said, I am tempted to remove some of the things that may be elaborations. Please cite them, or I'll remove them shortly.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dschroder (talkcontribs) 09:33, 19 September 2006 (UTC).[reply]

I didn't add the original uncited quotes, but I've added the requested footnotes and removed the citation notice. Pete 22:58, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Conservapedia target

[edit]

Note that this article was called out in Conservapedia's Examples of Bias in Wikipedia article:

21. Wikipedia's article on the longest-serving and most powerful Maryland official in its history, William Donald Schaefer, contains about 1900 words, but over two-thirds of those words (1400/1900) are devoted to silly gossip, outright vulgarity and National Enquirer-type material.[18] 406 words, which is over 20% of the entire entry, is devoted to a silly dispute Schaefer had one day with the local newspaper!

I've addressed one concern by junking the long section on a newspaper interview, which added nothing of biographical value and was already pointed to by an External links reference. Wasted Time R 20:23, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a section on Cabinet members?

[edit]

I'd like to add a section on Schaefer's Cabinet members. Does anyone have any suggestions on how that should be done? Do any other pages on Governors use a convention for that information? Eli.pousson (talk) 21:11, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Too much

[edit]

Too much original research, uncited allegations, and just plain redundant redundancies. Lots42 (talk) 11:52, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree: Uncited allegations and redundant redunancies - and worse.98.67.108.2 (talk) 03:05, 26 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Baltimore public housing

[edit]

During his tenure as mayor, he was famous (rightly or wrongly, I don't know) for having public housing occupants actually own their apartments. That (at least reportedly) led to much better maintenance and a lack of the social breakdown evident in the public housing of other major US cities. I don't know how big a deal this was in Baltimore, but among national political circles, it was Schaefer's signature accomplishment. I expected to see some coverage of the policy on his page. Much of this article reads like an obituary in a tabloid....

[edit]

Much of this article reads like an obituary in a tabloid or a church bulletin...
Yes, like statements about who "offered reflections" at Schafer's funeral an so forth - unnecessary statements that do not say anything real. Good opinions, bad opinions, with facts to back them up say something, but "offered reflections" says nothing at all:
good reflections, indifferent reflections, bad reflections, questionable reflections, with the facts, would at least SAY SOMETHING.98.67.108.2 (talk) 02:58, 26 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
