Birth year: 1955 or 1956?

[edit]

Gosling's birth year keeps going back and forth between 1955 and 1956. A search on Google using:

"James Gosling" Alberta 1955 -Wikipedia

yields 517 hits, while

"James Gosling" Alberta 1956 -Wikipedia

yields 137 hits. Most, but not all, of the hits show 1955/1956 as the birth year (the rest have the 1955/1956 search term matching something other than a birth date.)

I sent an email to Gosling asking his opinion in the matter...hopefully he can clear this up. —Doug Bell talkcontrib 09:56, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gosling states that 1955 is correct. —Doug Bell talkcontrib 22:05, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Doug Bell. Thank you for your contributions.

I wrote his birth year 1955 in ja:James Gosling. --AutumnSnow 05:33, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"I use Emacs" quote anyone?

[edit]

Does anyone have a document to cite to confirm that Gosling is an Emacs user? Thanks. Gronky 01:12, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well I do not have exactly that quote but I have this one from an Interview:-

"Q: Final question: Is emacs still your favorite integrated development environment (IDE)?

A: Oh, no. I switched over to the NetBeans IDE long ago."

Trivia section deletion

[edit]

I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I couldn't care less if Gosling grew a beard 50 feet long and used it to clean his house. Does stuff like this belong in a wikipedia page? A useful bit of trivia would have been something to do with his collaborations while working on a project. Alamandrax 09:18, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm one of the rest and I think such information would be interesting to read. Who are you to decide what others might find useful? -- Henriok (talk) 09:17, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Picture captions "James Gosling" and "James Gosling in Australia"

[edit]

It's unclear from the caption of the first picture whether Gosling is in Australia or not. Fortunately for the reader, the second picture's caption sets a better example. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.168.1.5 (talk) 10:56, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Honors Unclear

[edit]
In 2007, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.[2] The Order is Canada's highest civilian honour. Officers are the second highest grade.

Did he receive the highest ("The Order", as stated), or second highest (Officer, as stated) award? This probably needs to be explained better. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.233.207.225 (talk) 18:16, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't find it too unclear? The order is the highest honour for a civilian, and Officer is the second highest rank of the order. 130.240.136.67 (talk) 08:34, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

NeWS EOL

[edit]

“At Sun he invented an early Unix windowing system called NeWS, which became a lesser-used alternative to the still used X Window System, because Sun did not give it an open source license.[citation needed]”

Gosling did not invent NeWS because Sun did not give NeWS and open source license - this isn't grammatical at all.

Sun was not able to give NeWS source code away because of intellectual property from Morisawa relating to Folio (F3) fonts. I was part of team that tried to licence NeWS from Sun once. Not sure if i can dig up anything in writing about that. Barefootliam (talk) 23:59, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
