I admit we do not have much info on sap, but it might help if you looked at the word sap instead of the acronym SAP. --Pascal666 06:26, 27 Jun 2004 (UTC)

SAP as "Second Audio Program"

[edit]

A small distinction, but I've heard SAP (in this usage) referred to as SecondARY Audio Program. It probably doesn't matter, but I was just wondering if that IS the correct label should the entry be changed to reflect that? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.72.181.4 (talkcontribs) 12:54, April 12, 2007 (UTC)

Currently, that other article is titled Second audio program, so we wouldn't want to change this disambiguation page unless that article title was changed. If you have a published source for the name variation you believe to be correct, you may want to bring it up at Talk:Second audio program. And since that article currently does not have any references at all, if you can provide some it would be a great help. Thanks, Satori Son 13:04, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Poor old sap

[edit]

Was wondering if anyone has ever heard the phrase before? Where it came from, ect. I think there should be a topic for this and a link to the disambiguation page. JoeyGWilliams 00:13, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just want to clarify a couple of things to avoid further reverts. For one, I have a fair amount of experience with the disambiguation project and am quite confident that there's no such concept as "primary meaning" with a different definition than "primary topic". And in order for this topic to become the primary topic, the following would need to happen: 1) an article would have to actually exist for this topic and 2) a move request and discussion which resulted in consensus to move this page to SAP (disambiguation) and have SAP redirect to the newly created Systems, Applications and Products. -- Fyrael (talk) 17:58, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

SAP Center/SAP Open/SAP (NYTimes)

[edit]

While various usages for SAP exist among the multiple Disambiguation pages, including those from the pre-World War II (e.g. 1911-1934), the SAP Center and SAP Open usages refer to the company and the software under the name SAP. The New York Times agrees. Pi314m (talk) 20:30, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's not clear what changes you're suggesting here. What other disambiguation pages are you referring to? And yes, the "SAP" part of the arena and tennis tournament's names is from the company SAP SE, but again I'm not sure what you're getting at. -- Fyrael (talk) 20:52, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What I'd like to do is have the "SAP (disambiguation)" page be what its name says, and have "SAP" be about the company and software. The awkard workarounds I recently encountered, such as having seen an article say "uses [[SAP xxx|SAP]]" should not be necessary. Pi314m (talk) 21:06, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

– SAP Center and SAP Open refer to the company and software. NYTimes agrees. Pi314m (talk) 21:06, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I just realized that there's an assumption here that needs to be explicitly put into your move proposal. Pi314m, please specify at the top of the section whether you're asking for SAP SE to be moved to just SAP or for SAP to become a redirect to SAP SE. -- Fyrael (talk) 16:02, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Primary Topic/Long Term: "Is there a primary topic?" mentions primary long-term significance. In the computer field, SAP is it. (NYTimes).
    • Among the entries listed: Two of the four businesses are about the same SAP. Of the remaining pair, one is a 1902-1920 French car company, the other is an Australian rodent poison manufacturer.
    • Among the Computing and telecommunication entries, one is SAP, the company related to SAP AG in the FreshDirect article. Both are SAP, the protected name.
    • Atari SAP format? It's a SAP that needs a qualifier.
    • Biology and SLAM-associated-protein? That's a DOUBLE dipper, since it uses SLAM to double-acronym.
    • Under Other uses 3 of the 4 ARE SAP! (SAP Arena, SAP Center, SAP Open). As for the airport, huh? Ramon Villeda Morales airport is SAP?
The article actually seems to suggest LMS as the more correct identifier (for the airport), but there must be another airport that uses it. This is like Denver's DIA (Denver International Airport) vs. DEN.
In short, SAP has both the attribute of long-term and, at least according to NYTimes, it's the same SAP as Center/Open/Arena. Plus, SAP (disambiguation) seems like a disambiguation page. Pi314m (talk) 11:44, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify about the title, the only thing that determines whether a given disambiguation page has " (disambiguation)" attached is us deciding there's a primary topic. So that bit isn't an argument for either title. You keep mentioning the NYTimes, but make no specific reference, so we don't know what you're talking about. If you just mean that the paper has some articles that use "SAP" to refer to that company, yes I'm sure that's true, but reliable sources have referred to every topic on this page as "SAP" at one time or another. Otherwise they wouldn't appear here. -- Fyrael (talk) 15:25, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: So here are the page view stats in order to talk about usage. As a note, I've left Alkaline phosphatase off of there despite its high view count because only 2 sentences of that article are actually about SAP (Shrimp alkaline phosphatase). The guideline suggests a primary topic have more than all other topics combined, and if you leave off SAP ERP then it looks like the company probably meets that. The reason I'd ignore SAP ERP is because it's linked to right in the opening paragraph at SAP SE and so would be pretty much just as easy to find whether the move goes through or not. The long-term significance side of things does give me some pause, since the Swedish Social Democratic Party has a fair amount of views and has been around since 1889. On the other hand, SAP SE is rated a vital article to the Society project, while Swedish Social Democratic Party is mid- and high-importance to a couple of projects. Overall I'm in the support camp, but not by a large margin. -- Fyrael (talk) 15:47, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'd love to get an admin or just someone more knowledgeable involved because this bit needs to go properly into the proposal at the top, not just another bulleted comment down here. I simply don't know how to do it properly. There should also be some notification on the SAP SE page about this move discussion. -- Fyrael (talk) 15:03, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
 Done. Primefac (talk) 15:25, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • 2nd Clarification (re NYTimes): doing Google> "SAP" ("nytimes" OR "new york times") (including quote marks)
finds: 11 of 15 (NYTimes) are SAP, 4 are the word sap (e.g. from a tree).

A plain old search for "SAP" finds the company's web site as #1, Twitter.com/SAP as #2, SAP SE as #3, and the next 4 are SAP.

As for Sweden, a google for "SAP" Sweden finds Swedish Social Democratic Party as #1, #s 2-4 are SAP.com, then #s 5-10 are _about_ SAP (glassdoor, whitehallresources, CapGemini, se.LinkedIn, RedSAPsolutions, concur.se "Concur is a SAP company") Pi314m (talk) 10:57, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Software Applications Programming (System Application Product)

[edit]

I am reading through a bunch of trainings for my new job at a large company and they use "SAP" extensively. I looked up SAP in their "Abbreviations" document and it says they use SAP to stand for "Software Applications Programming (System Application Product)". They are using a version of SAP for their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platform. I wonder if SAP as a software deserves a mention in the disambiguation. I think it would be the "SAP Software" referenced in the SAP company page, here: https://www.panorama-consulting.com/resource-center/erp-database/sap/. This was not easy for me to find because I thought I was looking for an SAP that was a software product, not the name of a company. Jojojlj (talk) 22:30, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Update from the training: "ERP systems are in place at most major corporations today. SAP is the global software market leader of ERP software." Jojojlj (talk) 19:22, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The entry you're looking for is in the Computing and telecommunication section: SAP ERP, business data software by SAP SE. -- Fyrael (talk) 20:22, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
