I've removed this text because it's not true [1]:

he is a Vice-President of the Party of European Socialists

Maybe it was true at some point in the past? If so, please provide something to back up the claim. Gronky 22:19, August 12, 2005 (UTC)

Please don't engage in personal attacks, especially in edit summaries. My last edits fixed some problems of phraseology and structure. If you want a section about his work as an MEP, then it should include all the material in the article regarding his work as an MEP, not just the way he voted on one proposal. In fact, I'm inclined to think the reference to that proposal should be removed altogether. De Rossa's voted and made statements on hundreds of proposals, so why include just this one? It seems rather silly, almost a non-sequitur.

If you really think that "he has been a member of the European Parliament where he a member of the Party of European Socialists" reads better than "he has been a member of the European Parliament in the Party of European Socialists group" you're entitiled to that opinion, but I don't think many people will share it. Looking now, I see that this has mostly been my mistake. First I misread the diff of your change and thought that you deleted two sentences which you actually just moved to a more suitable location, and second I somehow didn't see your comments here until you brought them to my attention.
The one part I will re-add is about his voting on the Software Patents direct. This directive is significant because it's the second biggest directive that European Parliament has handled. I couldn't understand why you deleted information from that paragraph.
Gronky 21:58, August 21, 2005 (UTC)

Fair enough, we all make mistakes. What do you mean by second-biggest directive, though? And why don't you put in information as to how he voted on the biggest one (whichever it may be)? In terms of overall significance and De Rossa's own expertise and interests, the Bolkestein directive is surely more worthy of a mention than this one. Palmiro | Talk 16:42, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Bolkestein/services directive is indeed the biggest, but I don't know much about it. The software patents directive is one that I've worked on, and it being the second biggest is something I heard a lot - mostly from the MEP assistants. It didn't get huge coverage in Ireland but it's been front page news in France and it's in every edition of the European/EU papers. Gronky 22:05, August 22, 2005 (UTC)

Content of the further reading section

[edit]

Further reading cites "The Workers Party in Dáil Éireann: The First Ten Years, The Workers Party, 1991" - but I can't find this thing. What is it, a book? It's not in the online bookshops. Using a search engine to search for "The Workers Party in Dáil Éireann" only finds this Wikipedia page (and the Wikipedia rip-off sites). Unless this work does exist (but maybe the title is wrong?) I think this thing that cannot be further read should be outed from the Further reading section. 159.134.78.128 12:45, 19 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it's a book. It's in the University College Dublin library, and I very carefully copied the title from it there (and the citation of The Workers Party as author/publisher is as per the book itself and the UCD library catalogue). So it can stay, and it is possible for other people to find it. The Workers Party had enough ousters of one sort or another in its day, surely we don't need any more! MEP

[edit]

De Rossa was Member of the European Parliament between 1989 and 1992. But who replaced him 1992 - 1994 in the European Parliament, when he left it 1992 ? --62.104.146.209 20:00, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it was Des Geraghty. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MEPs_for_Ireland_1989-1994 Deepsoulstarfish 00:31, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I distinctly remember Geraghty being selected at a Workers Party convention in Dublin in late 1991 or very early in 1992 to replace De Rossa in the European Parliament. Tensions were already building towards the split and some opponents of the rightward move wanted Sean Garland to stand against Geraghty at the convention (both were on a list of substitutes nominated as future possible replacement for De Rossa at the time of the 1989 European Election). I rembember this convention was covered by the party paper at the time - Tomorrow's People. Coolavokig (talk) 10:02, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First line

[edit]

I altered "..former Labour Party politician" to "..former politician" because surely it is usual to avoid trying to sum up a multi-party career with the name of just one party, especially in such a case as this where the subject achieved a significant position in three of the four parties of which he has been a member. If anyone objects, perhaps "..former left-wing politician" would be the right way to go. Harfarhs (talk) 12:05, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
