Discussion

[edit]

24.252.91.111 added a final sentence "Nothing further is known of her life until her death in 1748". In order to get closure for the narrative, perhaps? But I've removed it, as it's not true. Her life is known all right, she was a famous person by then, it would have been odd if she'd disappeared from sight. People have contact with her and mention her ongoingly, for instance Colley Cibber talks in his autobiography about how charming she still is (in 1740). There just wasn't anything interesting enough going on in that part of her life to put in the article, I thought. She lived quietly.--Bishonen | Talk 11:18, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)

On quitting the stage

[edit]

I wish people would stop reverting my "quitted the stage" to "quit the stage". Both forms are equally correct and when that's the case it's Wikiquette to respect the original author's choice of style. The reason I prefer quitted is that it's less colloquial and exclusively modern, and "quitted the stage" is by way of being an idiom (old-fashioned, but hey, it's the 18th century). In most contexts, I would prefer quit, too, just not here. It's hardly worth a revert war, though. The next time somebody "corrects" it to quit, I'll just change it to "she left the stage".--Bishonen | Talk 11:18, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)
