In the treating of epileptics I find it most exciting that a Ketogenic diet could function almost as well as the chemical drugs. These diets I read upon, are very high in fat content and almost little to no carbohydrates. I ask myself how could this work in a complicated machine like the brain? In a world like the one we have today where just about everyone is looking for the panacea through herbs, natural elements, the sun, the moon, meditation, etc, it is wonderful to see how we are trying to get out of what once was recognized (and still is) the greatest invention of all, cure through medicines created in the laboratory. I feel that in the case of an epileptic, the illness in itself is so scary, people do not seem too grow accustom to the seizures, no matter how many they have,as a matter of fact the more you have the more dangerous it gets so its probably not going to be easy to wait for a diet to "click" in your brain. This has to be the most difficult part while in this illness. Meanwhile you take a drug like Tigretol, Depakene, and you feel better almost instantly. You can have the seizures less often and this will give the patient a better quality of life.

Caption

[edit]

I just removed the caption to a diagram. The caption appeared to have little relationship to the diagram, as it talked about "levels" of analysis. The diagram shows links between disciplines. It has nothing whatsoever to do with "levels" of anything. If the picture is to remain, the a suitable caption ought to be written for it. Amandajm (talk) 09:39, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Redundant articles

[edit]

There are a number of related articles that cover basically the same topic as this one:

I'm thinking that Nervous system disease just redirect to this page (Neurological disorder). Central nervous system disease I'm not sure what to do with, maybe a merge. And delete List of neurological conditions and disorders after adding all the articles to Category:Neurological disorders. I'm sure there are better ideas out there so I just want to throw this out and see what you think. Gccwang (talk) 21:13, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think that List of neurological conditions and disorders is valuable as a separate article. ParticipantObserver (talk) 18:59, 3 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Separating neurodevelopmental disorders from neuropsychiatric illnesses

[edit]

Neurodevelopmental conditions, also known as neurodivergences, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and learning disabilities do not fit into neuropsychiatric illness. It's increasingly known that they are not "associated with known nervous system injury, underdevelopment, biochemical, anatomical, or electrical malfunction, and/or disease pathology".

They have, instead, a predominantly genetic cause, with environmental factors contributing in a smaller extent, and carry not pathological symptoms, but rather developmental deficits, disabilities, and harmless peculiarities of personality and professional performance peculiarities, such as hyperfocus, stims, and "quirky" behaviors in ASD and ADHD.

Moreover, attributing to neurodivergences the erroneous definition of "ilnesses" "associated with known nervous system injury, underdevelopment, biochemical, anatomical, or electrical malfunction, and/or disease pathology" promotes a stigmatized and derogatory view of those conditions and, at the same time, unethical and prejudiced ways of dealing with people that have them.

Therefore, I recommend to put those conditions into a separate category - neurodevelopmental conditions - and speak about them without that current pathologizing approach. I did not edit it myself because I think people with deeper knowledge of scientific sources on neurodevelopmental disorders are more able to edit it more properly. Actually, that text does not appear to match the source. I've accordingly removed it. ParticipantObserver (talk) 10:43, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reference has become stale.

[edit]

Reference [15] "NIMH publications (2009) Neuroimaging and Mental Illness" is stale and searching the NIH site I was not able to find the article. Is there the ability to scan all external links on a periodic basis to identify those that have become stale? Rmbrinda (talk) 04:56, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
