Biography
[edit]Jayatu Chakma is a Bangladeshi artist known for his deeply political artwork that explores the lives and challenges of ethnic minority communities, particularly those in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). Born on January 10, 1990, in Rangamati, Bangladesh, Jayatu pursued his passion for art by earning his BFA and MFA from the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Chittagong, and later another MFA from Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata, India. Currently, he teaches drawing at a school in Dhaka.
Jayatu’s art is heavily influenced by the socio-political issues faced by the indigenous communities of the CHT, particularly focusing on the impact of development projects like the Kaptai Dam, which displaced thousands of people and led to a lasting cultural and economic upheaval.
Artworks
[edit]Jayatu Chakma’s artwork spans a variety of media, including painting, installation art, sculpture, and digital art. His works often depict the struggles and lost memories of the Jumma people, using symbolic elements like the Rongrang bird (a now-extinct hornbill species) to represent the fading cultural heritage of the hill communities.
One of his key artistic themes is the contrast between the outward beauty of the CHT and the inner turmoil faced by its inhabitants. His art frequently features faceless figures and minimalistic compositions to convey anonymity and loss, while also addressing broader themes of state oppression and social injustice.
