VFD Bot

[edit]

I changed usernames for the bot. All edits will be made under VFD Bot. In addition, in regards to your watchlist comment, I have an idea for a bot that can do something like that. We could place it at User:VFD Bot/All where it would take all the days listed on VFD, change the transincludes to subst: and update it... every 15 minutes? -- AllyUnion (talk) 05:16, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The only thing is that people need to be aware that votes do not go on that page, but rather on the actual VFD subpage, and the page is for reference purposes only. What do you think? -- AllyUnion (talk) 05:19, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)
I'm confused. Perhaps you intended this comment for someone else? dbenbenn | talk 17:33, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Nevermind. I thought you were the one asking for a page that had the entire VFD without transincludes. -- AllyUnion (talk) 17:17, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

VfD grunt work

[edit]

You asked at WP:AN about VfD. Certainly, you can handle any nomination that doesn't end in delete. And it would be a great help. In fact, consistently helping to close keepers is a good way to get nominated for adminship, if that's what you want. (Worked for me!)

Please let me know if you have any questions about the deletion process. dbenbenn | talk 00:17, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)

hahaha... thanks for the advice, and I'd be glad to help. I'm not really looking into getting an adminship now (I'm way too new), but down the road, it may be useful for WP:CSDs and reverting vandalism. --Deathphoenix 00:32, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for helping out with the gruntwork. One thing to remember: when you do a merge or redirect (Rising crescent moon), check "what links here" and fix any resulting double redirects. dbenbenn | talk 17:41, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Woops, I must have missed that one. I did a double-redirect check on most of them (and fixed one for Synnax, but I must have missed that one. My apologies. --Deathphoenix 18:21, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)
No problem at all. I forget too sometimes. dbenbenn | talk 00:11, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hey, Dbenbenn, I have a question for you regarding the VfD notices. I've noticed a couple of times that other people blank VfD notices on VfD articles without going through the deletion process. Although the discussion result is keep, should I drop a polite note to the author not to do it again, or should I just let it slide because the article is kept anyway? So far, I've just assumed good faith and not dropped a message (because the blanking is usually done after the five day VfD period), but what's the standard procedure for matters such as this? Thanks for your help. --Deathphoenix 07:57, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hey Death. I don't think there's a standard procedure. I usually just let it slide, out of laziness. But if you drop a link to the deletion process at their talk page, that might have the beneficial effect of recruiting more VfD helpers. dbenbenn | talk 00:06, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I think you should put something in place for vandals. Make it so people have to sign up before posting, im not signed up! And look what i've done. -Adam-

Transwiki

[edit]

We're not in charge of ensuring that stuff is transwikied. Just close the debate, add it to transwiki log, and add one of the appropriate templates: (Might be best to leave VFD tag or a link to VFD discussion)

You need to close the debate, irregardless whether the action has been completed or not. If the debate isn't closed, technically, anyone can still vote on it. -- AllyUnion (talk) 15:19, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the info. I've added it to Wikipedia:Deletion process. dbenbenn | talk 17:25, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Hmm... you know, they become candidates for transwiking, even though the consensus was to transwiki... Maybe we should use different templates? -- AllyUnion (talk) 10:14, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, that's why I was confused. I knew about the templates before, but I figured there was something different for after a VfD. dbenbenn | talk 03:30, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Eh. Technically, they do become candidates... candidates for consideration of merit of whether they are worth moving, I suppose. -- AllyUnion (talk) 17:19, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Alas, I was only able to shave 0.5% off the big version. Perhaps eventually they'll raise the limit above 22MB. In the mean time, at least you now have a backup copy in case your computer crashes. dbenbenn | talk 17:49, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Indeed, and what a business that was, I think that whole back-and-forth between the two of us may have been what immediately afterwards killed wiki dead for 27 hours or whatever it was. ;-) And now we also each have a backup copy of the big image in case wiki dies for good and all, to give them a bit of a new start. All the best, have fun! Bishonen | Talk 18:43, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)

JamesBurns

[edit]

Better check over the VFD votes... JamesBurns has voted on some really old stuff... and his contributes are 75% VFD since he started editing here. -- AllyUnion (talk) 14:51, 27 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, it's strange. The more I see him, the more I discount his opinion. He rarely offers a supporting reason, and often seems to vote against the consensus just for kicks. dbenbenn | talk 20:32, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

re: equiveillance

[edit]

how can I get my equiveillance article back? please let me know where the last copy is so i can put the article up in another journal: I recieved no notification of the removal: not all wikipedians had a chance to vote.

so please send me my last edit of the article: stefanos pantagis, MD —Comment by User:67.85.122.204.

Please create an account (which only takes a few seconds and is free) and include your email address in the appropriate field. I'll be happy to email you the last version of equiveillance. dbenbenn | talk 03:27, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

my email is stefanospan@msn.com

if you can get this to me as soon as possible due to a magazine we are putting together that will need this idea delineated.

I am planning to add to several other wikipedia articles that i am "expert in" to work out how i undermined my self with the equiveillance term.

thank you for any advise and I hope to figure out how to advocate for undelete, but first we need to have more google hits on the term.

I've sent it. Let me know if there was any problem. dbenbenn | talk 16:04, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Sorry to bother you again, but the file is not downloading due to it being classified as a incurable file: please send again: it could be just the text and not as an attachment.

Mussolini

[edit]

Hi, on Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion you nominated two pictures of Benito Mussolini to be deleted since they now can be found at Commons. However, somebody on Commons has tagged them to be deleted there too, since they are not verified PD or GFDL. It is possible that Italy follows a EU copyright directive that means that the copyright is owned by the photographer, lifetime + 70 years. The two Mussolini pictures were first uploaded to Wikipedia by User:J.J. who, in my view, has made several careless uploads before. If you have time you can take a look at Commons:Benito Mussolini. Regards, Thuresson 22:44, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for catching that, Thuresson. I only nominated those two since they were incorrectly tagged for speedy deletion here. I don't think the Commons versions were tagged for deletion at the time. Anyway, I've withdrawn the IFD nominations. dbenbenn | talk 00:17, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Go images

[edit]

Just wanted give you a friendly reminder about those Go images. . . if you're still willing. Your previous ones look great! – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 01:12, Mar 2, 2005 (UTC)

Manual assisted VFD Bot

[edit]

I forgot to mention... it needs perl, and grep. It is preferred you run it in a cygwin enviroment or a Linux enviroment with python, and perl installed. -- AllyUnion (talk) 17:24, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

There was a consensus, the vote was to delete. --Spinboy 17:26, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Well, it doesn't appear that way to me. Feel free to renominate it. dbenbenn | talk 17:51, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I counted. 5 votes to delete, 3 to keep. That means it should be deleted. I put the vfd tag back on the page so an admin can delete it. --Spinboy 18:01, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)
So did I, of course. I also read the comments. I agree that the discussion was vaguely leaning towards "delete", but it isn't what I'd call consensus. Again, feel free to renominate it. To do so, simply move Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Star Wars MUSH somewhere else (I suggest Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Star Wars MUSH/first nomination). By the way, the reason we require a clear consensus to delete is that it's so easy to renominate. dbenbenn | talk 19:56, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Good idea, I'll do that. --Spinboy 20:08, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

As of March 4, 2005, the following (7) articles are currently listed for deletion under the POV suggestion that schools are not notable (even though this is invalid reasoning as per the Wikipedia deletion policy. Whether you agree or disagree, please be aware that the following schools are actively being voted on:

Thank you for your time. --GRider\talk

Comment. By the way, I am keeping a close eye on Spinboy and the Star Wars MUSH article. --GRider\talk

Protecting Main Page images

[edit]

Hi Neutrality,

When you put a new image on the Main Page [1], please remember to protect it (preferably before it goes on) and add {{ProtectedMainPageImage}} to the description page.

Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 23:46, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Sorry. I knew about the policy but forgot to protect the picture. :) I'll remember next time. Thanks for the reminder. Warmest regards --Neutralitytalk 00:35, Mar 5, 2005 (UTC)

Nelli Kim

[edit]

Hi Cmapm, I fixed up Nelli Kim. Sorry it took so long—WP:CP is really overloaded, and we don't have enough people willing to help deal with these constant chores. In the future, when you need a copyvio to be expedited, it might be a good idea to mention it at WP:AN. Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 03:05, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi, David (or Dbenbenn if you prefer it)! Thanks, for the expedition of copyvio, concerning this topic! As concerns {{permission}} vs GFDL, I emailed Avsenev with corresponding question, waiting for the answer now. I need your advice then:
  • should I alter my templates {{gymnast ru}} and {{gymnast ru image}} in some way, or maybe add {{permission}} template in the articles after my templates, right now, which will remain there, if I'll get a negative answer from Avsenev;
  • should I alter my templates in some way or maybe add {{GFDL}} template in the articles after my templates if I get a positive answer from Avsenev?
What do you think? Sorry, I'm not an expert in copyrights, and therefore can't be helpful in your work. But if you need some help in other fields, e.g. in topics, mentioned on my user page, feel free to contact me through my talk page. Once again, many thanks and best regards! Cmapm 14:50, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I added {{permission}} to {{gymnast ru image}}. If Avsenev accepts the GFDL, you should change it to {{GFDL}}, and write a few sentences at {{gymnast ru}} indicating that. But the {{GFDL}} template is only for use in images—text is assumed to be GFDL anyway. See {{planetmath}} for an example. dbenbenn | talk 18:13, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I'm sorry for violating the communication style preferred by you. And I'm grateful for your answer and help! Cmapm 19:07, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
What? Oh, no problem. Perhaps now the pastel box at the top of User talk:Dbenbenn is clearer. dbenbenn | talk 19:15, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Yes, it is. And BTW, this is a good idea. I'll use it since now too. Cmapm 20:13, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Admin nomination

[edit]

I thought you were an admin already. Would you like me to nominate you? dbenbenn | talk 23:53, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi, I'd like to take you up on your offer of nominating me for administrator status, BUT only if you think there is a reasonable prospect of success. The reason I delayed in responding was that I was waiting to hear from Wile E Heresiarch, who had offered first (in a roundabout sort of way). I should mention that, in the end, Wile reconsidered his offer. He felt that because the bulk of my recent activity was on Talk: and Wikipedia: namespace pages, that this might become an issue, the Admin promotion process being rather fickle. He did say he would support my nomination, but he was uncomfortable making the nomination himself if its success was in doubt. I have a bit less than 3000 edits, including about 700 main article space edits, but it is true that my interest since January has been more in the "information architecture" and policy of Wikipedia than in article content. I would be very willing to help out with VfD/Old and merges. It would be a bit ironic if someone who was actually nore interested in the admin side of things would be disqualified on that basis, but Wikipedia is an odd place. If, upon reflection, you think Wile is right, and would also like to reconsider your offer, I will perfectly understand, as I don't really want to go through a vote if its outcome is in much doubt. --BM 18:11, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I'll be happy to nominate you right now. I honestly don't know whether you'll "pass", though. It's up to you. (See Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Fvw and Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Fvw2 for what sometimes happens when a nomination fails.)
Alternatively, if you want to wait about three weeks, I have two suggestions that might improve your chances. First, remember to always give a good edit summary. Some people who vote at WP:RFA care about that. And second, you can start closing old keeps and merges at WP:VFD/Old. We just lost User:AllyUnion, who did a lot of VfD work, so it would be terribly helpful. And a few weeks of consistently doing that will demonstrate the need for admin abilities.
So, let me know what you'd like to do. dbenbenn | talk 21:18, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I'll take your suggestion to wait three weeks. There is no big rush. I might as well prove I'm willing to do admin chores that don't require super-powers -- by doing them. I'll start in on closing out some of the old VfD's. Thanks for the tip about the edit summaries. I do tend to omit them on minor edits, especially in Talk or Wikipedia pages. --BM 21:46, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi Dbenbenn, you have a 27Feb IFD listing for this image. The wikipedia image has already been deleted but I can't find the commons replacement that you note (link above). Is your commons link a typo?

thanks Duk 16:48, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Yep, it was a typo. I blindly assumed the file name stayed the same; it was really Commons:Image:Europa-Pos.png. I've noted that at WP:IFD#February 27. dbenbenn | talk 17:20, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Adminship

[edit]

Hi Korath,

I notice you close some VfD discussions. How would you like to be able to close "deletes" as well as "keeps"? If I nominate you for adminship, will you accept?

dbenbenn | talk 15:55, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC) (P.S. drop me a line at my talk page when you respond, or I'll never see it.)

My current desire to become an admin is somewhere between little and none.
  • I don't want my recent closing of VfD discussions to look like a blatant attempt at campaigning for a nomination, as opposed to the emergency catch-up in /Old that they were.
  • I'm not at all interested in the enforcement side of things. (Though when the Mediawiki bug is fixed, I might be interested in resurrecting Fvw's OpenProxyBlockerBot.)
  • I think it's likely that my bid would fail, probably rather spectacularly, due to an unpleasant juxtaposition of my strong deletionist tendencies and the fact that (as noted on my user page) my article-namespace contributions are subtrivial.
  • I'm trying to cut down on my presence here, not increase it. :)
So in short, thank you for the kind offer, but no, not at this time. Maybe later. —Korath (Talk) 17:23, Mar 8, 2005 (UTC)

Standard Model Chart

[edit]

You really think we should use Image:std_model.png, instead of Image:standardmodel.png, because of the higher resolution? I changed to the lower resolution so the image when viewed in a browser would be a better viewing size... If so, we need to take std_model.png off of the deletion list and put the other smaller one on possibly? (by User:Rmrfstar at 02:35, 10 Mar 2005)

At the image description pages, Wikipedia thumbnails both images to the same size. I think the highest resolution should always be kept—you might need the extra resolution when printing, for example. And the text in the higher resolution version is easier to read. One thing you could do is upload the lower resolution with the same name as the higher resolution one. That way both will be available. dbenbenn | talk 14:24, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Please see my not-so-well-advertised solution at User:Arvindn/Chess. This approach can be used for non-chess games too, like Go, or whatever. -- Paddu 14:52, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Err... For some reason http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Arvindn/Chess?action=edit works but User:Arvindn/Chess doesn't. :( -- Paddu 15:18, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Hi Paddu. From skimming that page, it doesn't appear you've come to any conclusions. You didn't end up making a competing template, did you? As far as Go, see Rules of Go, which now uses {{Go board 5x5}}. I haven't made a 19 by 19 Go template yet: I'm frightened by the prospect of 361 parameters!
Hey come on, I'm not competing (as in opposing, etc.) with you. I just made a suggestion. If you like this syntax:
			{{chess board|
			|r|__n|_b|q_|_k|_b|___n|r|
			|p|__p|_p|px|_p|_x|___p|_|
			|_|___|_x|__|__|_p|_xhi|_|
			|_|___|__|__|_N|__|____|p|
			|_|___|_x|__|__|__|___x|_|
			|_|___|__|_x|__|_x|____|_|
			|P|__P|_P|_P|_P|_P|___P|P|
			|R|Nhi|_B|_Q|Kx|_B|____|R|
			}}
or some variant, go ahead and rename images appropriately and start using in chess articles. I don't want to do that myself as I haven't contributed to any chess articles and I don't want to go about messing up articles I don't have much idea about.
I'm sure the above syntax is much better than your one-line-full-of-pipes-and-chess-pieces syntax. If you feel some variant would be better I might be able to help on how that could be achieved. Note that in the above the underscores could be replaced with spaces. Also note that we would like to support squares with highlight, an X mark, etc. These are what are indicated by cells like |Nhi|, |_x|, etc. HTH.
BTW if you want a "competing" implementation, see User:Sverdrup/test4.
One problem I have with the chess board template is that it's hard to put a caption on the board. See Evergreen game for an example. To fix it will require changing Wikipedia's style sheet. Do you have any suggestions about that? dbenbenn | talk 16:02, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I don't understand. I see that in that article there is a caption for the board. What is stopping from having the code for the caption in the chess board template (or in a chess board template, having another chess board template for boards without caption, etc.) -- Paddu 06:40, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I didn't mean anything by "competing"—I just wondered if there was some other template I should use instead. Anyway, I like your suggestion for laying out the parameters; I've done it at Fork (chess). It didn't require renaming images, though. And I agree that highlighted squares of various types might eventually be useful; but you still won't need to rename the existing images. dbenbenn | talk 19:41, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

btw there shouldn't be any need to use images for chess positions anymore. see chess symbols in unicode
Eventually that might be a good solution. But right now, Internet Explorer is unable to display the symbols. dbenbenn | talk 14:59, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Well, I suppose you should use an alternate template that ignores parameter 1, uses parameters 2..9 for the topmost row, ignores parameter 10, uses parameters 11..18 for the next row, ignores parameter 19, and so on, e.g. User:Sverdrup/test3. That gives a cleaner syntax, without the need for HTML comment tricks. Note that apart from the 64 parameters for the squares and the 9 ignored parameters for convenient syntax, named parameters for size, etc. have to be standardised. Probably "caption" can also be a parameter in the template. Probably there could be separate templates with & without caption. Wikipedia:WikiProject Chess seems to be dead, so probably the place to ask for ideas before the template could be standardised is WP:VP. I'll see if I get time for summarising User:Arvindn/Chess some day.... -- Paddu 07:06, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi Dbenbenn,

thanks for improving the first sentence. I felt it was awkward, but I couldn't quite figure it out. I am pleased to read that you find the article I wrote more helpful for understanding what countersteering is about. --Cleon Teunissen | Talk 16:08, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing the article! dbenbenn | talk 16:21, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

VfD high schools

[edit]

Just so you know, I and apparently some others disagree with AllyUnion about GRider's get-out-the-vote efforts. There appears to be no consensus that his message was "vote stacking", and also no consensus that this sort of thing is not permitted on VfD. Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 16:18, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi there! Yes, I am aware that G/Rider's efforts to keep high schools aren't necessarily 'vote stacking' or illegal or anything. However, you must admit that they're unusual, and I do believe that were it used on any topic that's less controversial than high schools, people would disapprove.
Anyway, VfD isn't really about voting (although it often seems to be), but instead it's about discussion to form a consensus. On that ground, I've asked G/Rider if he would consider seeking consensus in another way. I have no intention to go to RfC over this, don't worry.
Yours, Radiant! 17:07, Mar 10, 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I agree, GRider seems to specialize in being unusual and pushing on boundaries. dbenbenn | talk 17:39, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Chuck Two image

[edit]

You get another image on the Main Page! Cool! Any more information you have, like for Image:John Vanbrugh.png? I think I might move this one to the Commons, too. dbenbenn | talk 00:26, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hiya, Dbenbenn, I simply downloaded that Chuck Two image from the web, unfortunately, and cropped off an unwanted bit in Photoshop (that's why it's a .png, on account of the cropping). I'm pretty sure this is where I got him from: http://www.royal.gov.uk/files/images/charles-II_lrg.jpg, though there are other versions out there. Pages on royalty aren't an interest of mine, but Raul mentioned on IRC that he intended to feature Charles II soon, so I asked if he really wanted to disfigure the Main Page with the grotty BW image in that article (it's a mystery to me why people would pick the worst available image for their Featured article, Main Page or not, but perhaps there's some system to it). Anyway, predictably, Raul said {{sofixit}}, so I did, and he held off locking the template till I was done. But if it's nice high-res homemade scans in general that you're after, you could do worse than check out Image:Country Wife 1st ed 1675.png and Image:Country Wife 1675 cast.png, that my kid made the other day from a facsimile edition of Wycherley's The Country Wife, for an article I'm working on. They're BW, therefore amazingly "small", in spite of all the resolution. Bishonen | Talk 12:14, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Those scans are awesome. But for something really high-res, check out Commons:Image:South America satellite plane.jpg. :) dbenbenn | talk 07:27, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I wish that this article be reinstated so that I may Transwiki it to Star Wars Wiki. The new wiki was created just days ago and I forgot about this article, as GRider had been submitting numerous Star Wars articles for deletion in the Great Lucascruft Purge. If this article can be recovered, I will put it in the new wiki. Your help will be appreciated. -- Riffsyphon1024 22:16, Mar 13, 2005 (UTC)

I've restored it temporarily. Let me know when you've got it. dbenbenn | talk 22:53, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I have transwikied the article but since two larger articles on Wikipedia link to it, I have made it a redirect to Wikicities:c:StarWars:Trade Federation PAC. Is that fair to do? -- Riffsyphon1024 23:01, Mar 13, 2005 (UTC)
Okay. I've deleted it again. Feel free to do whatever you want with the red link. But I think a redirect offsite is considered a bad idea in general. If you're willing, it would be good to start an article to hold all those short Star Wars vehicle stubs; then you could make a redirect there. dbenbenn | talk 02:04, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
There is a list of vehicles. I can move the vehicles' articles themselves and then link from there to the SWW. -- Riffsyphon1024 03:26, Mar 14, 2005 (UTC)

A tip

[edit]

If you want to protect an image on the main page that is from commons, you don't have to upload it to en; just make an edit to the "go to commons" page and then protect it. See Image:Cannabisbud.jpg for an example. The only people who can upload it now are admins. →Raul654 05:21, Mar 16, 2005 (UTC)

That isn't quite right. A vandal could still log in at the Commons and upload a new image there. It isn't clear how likely it is that anyone would think of that, but why take chances? We didn't think people would notice the unprotected templates included on the Main Page, either. dbenbenn | talk 13:26, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I think at some point commons will need a "temporary protection requests" page where admins from the wikipedias can request an image is protected while its in a sensitive location. Plugwash 14:28, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Possibly. In the mean time, though, uploading here with an appropriate upload summary works fine. dbenbenn | talk 14:34, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Raul, I notice you've deleted the image. I don't understand why. There isn't much chance that someone will vandalize it in the next 8 hours, but again, why not make sure it's impossible? dbenbenn | talk 16:06, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)
'Doh - you're right. It never dawned on me that someone could vandalize commons. Just go ahead and disregard my tip ;) →Raul654 15:26, Mar 16, 2005 (UTC)

Admin log

[edit]

Hi Tony,

Congratulations on joining the kabal! I love your admin log idea. Looks like you've gotten to a great start, especially with blocking vandals.

I liked your idea so much, I've started a similar log at User:Dbenbenn/Admin log. Mine isn't wikified yet, though.

Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 14:21, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I sorted and bulleted your lsit so at least you'll be able to use it until you get your sed script working. No wikilinks yet. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 15:12, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Oh bollocks. Looks like I deleted the first digit of each timestamp. Oh well...--Tony Sidaway|Talk 15:59, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Marshall {foo}

[edit]

As far as I know, the Wikipedia style is to leave titles out of article names, so it's Ronald Reagan, not President Ronald Reagan, and George Marshall, not General George Marshall or Secretary George Marshall. I looked all over to see if this was written down, starting at Wikipedia:Naming conventions, but no luck; I've posted a query at the talk page, to get this clarified. Anway, I'm going to move them back to the unadorned names, since that seems (see above) to be our policy. Noel (talk) 18:06, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Oh, I see, after you swapped the histories, you also turned the old redirect into the article, and vice versa. You didn't make plain you were going to do that. Noel (talk) 18:11, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Sorry I didn't make that clear at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. dbenbenn | talk 19:05, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Lossless cropping

[edit]

Hi Foobaz. I noticed you losslessly cropped Image:Dalek from BBC.jpg. It's nice to see that someone else is paranoid about lossy compression, too! Do you use jpegtran to do it? dbenbenn | talk 14:35, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I couldn't get the cropping patches to jpegtran to work, so no. I use GraphicConverter. But i do use jpegtran -optimize before i upload jpg's to the wiki. It's amazing how much space that saves sometimes. It's good to know my obsessive behavior doesn't go unnoticed. Foobaz·o< 20:23, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I'll have to try that jpegtran -optimize out tonight. By the way, GraphicConverter doesn't indicate that it can do lossless operations on JPEGs—perhaps someone familiar with the program could improve the article ... dbenbenn | talk 21:28, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi Spangineer,

I love your photo of Cerro de la Silla. I decided to push it to the Commons as Commons:Image:Cerro de la Silla.jpg. The main benefit of uploading to the Commons is that the image can now be used on other language editions of Wikipedia, and on the sister projects. For example, it might eventually find its way to es:Monterrey.

I notice you multi-license your contributions with Creative Commons licenses. Perhaps you could go to Commons:Image:Cerro de la Silla.jpg and add {{cc-by-sa-2.0}} there? (I just want to be absolutely sure you intend this picture to be multilicensed.)

Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 03:21, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Dbenbenn, thanks for taking care of that. I added the license info. --Spangineer 03:28, Mar 21, 2005 (UTC)

Bot bug

[edit]

Hi Oleg,

Your categories/language links bot has a minor bug. See its change to Template:0-9.

Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 03:25, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. I inspect a good chuck of the changes by the bot, and I did see this particular one. However, I thought that it does not matter so much if the space is there or not. Do you think that can be an issue? Oleg Alexandrov 04:07, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I can answer my own question. I think that extra space in the template introduces extra space in the article. So, sorry!
And the reason for the bug is very simple. The bot did not expect to find a page where there is absolutely nothing but a category. I will fix it. Thanks again! Oleg Alexandrov 04:13, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Categories and user space

[edit]

Hi Instantnood, in case you haven't already found it, please see Wikipedia:Categorization#User namespace. Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 02:35, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hello David thanks for telling about Wikipedia:Categorization#User namespace. I have looked it up and I think it is hard to tell whether the two pages that I have created should be categorised. They are Wikipedia-specific topics, but some users told me it's inappropriate.. — Instantnood 07:13, Mar 24, 2005 (UTC)
I've added a sentence to Wikipedia:Categorization#User namespace clarifying that point. dbenbenn | talk 14:48, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Norwegian coats of arms

[edit]

Hi Egil. I've objected to a few of your listings at WP:IFD. The main problem I've found is that the coats of arms you've uploaded to the Commons, for example Commons:Image:Buskerud vapen.png, don't have copyright tags. Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 20:51, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Norwegian coats of arms are specifically not under copyright by Norwegian law. That is exactly why we've used the insignia marking. We've in fact spent considerable time discussing on the commons, and investigating (including asking a specialist Norwegian lawyer). If you object to the deletion, then what will happen is that the images on en: will remain orphans, and Wikipedia will waste a few kilobytes of storage. But that is now purely your responsibility, not mine. -- Egil 21:08, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
If they are public domain, you should simply tag them as such. The "insignia" tag specifically says
These restrictions are independent of the copyright status of the depiction shown here.
If they actually are public domain, why was it necessary to get the permission of Ralf Hartemink? dbenbenn | talk 21:55, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
According to Norwegian law, their use is restricted, so they are not in public domain per se. In for instance the US, I guess they may be treated as public domain, I don't know. There was a long discussion on the commons, the outcome of which was that these arms were encouraged there. The Template:coatofarms on en: has a more suitable wording, btw. The permission from Ralf Hartemink is for copying from his collection, for which, according to some jurisdictions at least, a copyright may exist. (That said, I'm not claiming permission was required, just that it was given). -- Egil 22:35, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Perhaps you could add something to Commons:Image:Buskerud vapen.png explaining that? For example, a link to the long discussion and outcome? A template, say {{Norwegian coat of arms}}, might be useful. dbenbenn | talk 22:46, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
This change needs to be done by a robot, because there are approx. 450 of this category. One of the discussion in the commons is in Commons:Commons:Deletion_requests/Archives02#Image:Steinkjer_komm.png. -- Egil 07:17, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Barnstar

[edit]
I, Quadell, hereby award you the Working-Man's Barnstar.

Dbenbenn, for all your hard work keeping up with images, especially in fixing moves to the Commons, I'd say this is long overdue. – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 00:53, Mar 26, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you, Quadell! dbenbenn | talk 01:16, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Separation axioms

[edit]

Hi Fibonacci. I notice you uploaded Image:RegularSpace.png and Image:NormalSpace.png. Perhaps you could put those at the Commons? See Commons:Topology, where the same two GIF files need to be replaced. (While you're at it, perhaps you could fix the CamelCase titles? "Normal space.png" and "Regular space.png" are a little nicer.) dbenbenn | talk 05:58, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hello. Sorry, I currently have an account only on the English and Spanish Wikipedias, and on Meta. But okay... I'll create one on Commons and upload, then. I wonder if it's worth creating an account only to upload a couple of files, though... --Fibonacci 06:11, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Well, it only takes about 5 seconds. I mean, I have an account on the Spanish Wikipedia, and I don't even know Spanish. :) dbenbenn | talk 06:48, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Oh! Well, in that case... nothing, for I've already uploaded the images. ;) --Fibonacci 07:20, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

GFDL versus CC

[edit]

Hi Cleduc. It turns out the GFDL, which is the license used here at Wikipedia, is incompatible with the various Creative Commons licenses. Hence, it isn't kosher to paste text from a CC source here. (White privilege) Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 09:43, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. I was under the mistaken impression they were compatible. The good thing is I've already rewritten the text I had copied. -- Cleduc 18:33, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Van the Man

[edit]

Hi Bishonen. What do you think of the recent change to Commons:Image:John Vanbrugh.jpg? dbenbenn | talk 02:40, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Oh, he's so gorgeous! Is that your work? Now imagine him at 25, galloping handsomely through the French countryside with secret depeches to William of Orange tucked inside his frilly shirt, ignominiously captured, but, nothing daunted, tunnelling out of the Bastille with a spoon! That all really happened (bar the spoon itself). Seriously, I love this version, the brightness and rosiness. It looks great. Mind you, it might not be a lot like the original looks today, but I bet it looks like the original when freshly painted.
Btw, do you have this info on the portrait itself? It's on display at the NPG, and they give the approximate date as circa 1704-1710 (i. e. he's 40-45 years old).
Medium: oil on canvas
Measurements: 36 in. x 28 in. (914 mm x 711 mm)

You have Commons:User:Anton to thank for those rosy cheeks. And thanks for the additional info; I've added it to Commons:Image:John Vanbrugh.png. dbenbenn | talk 19:48, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Vandalism

[edit]

I thought you'd want to know. . . it appears someone has vandalised your user page. ;)

Good one, Quadell, but a bit too subtle. I bet that would have stood a long time if you hadn't mentioned it. :) dbenbenn | talk 22:56, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
