Obligations to comply with PROD contested by p-blocked editor

    [edit]

Talk:Vásquez_House If a P-blocked editor who has been barred from editing in mainspace asks to have the PROD tag removed, am I required by guideline to comply with their request? The concern is at Talk:Vásquez_House Graywalls (talk) 07:06, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WP:DEPROD mentions a tag may be restored if removed by a banned user or blocked user evading a block. I take that to imply that enforcing sanctions overrides the principle that PRODs must only be used when no opposition is expected, and thus you don't have to remove your PROD if you don't want to. But others may disagree. There does not appear to be any explicit guidance either way. – Teratix 10:01, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I placed the PROD. The requestor in question is blocked from directly editing main space and requested by request edit to DEPROD it. Given he's given step-by-step on how to do it, I feel like he's looking for inexperienced editor who isn't aware of the totality of situation to come along and just do it. undo edit

    [edit]

    Hello,

I made an edit to a page without setting up an account first. Then I realized the risk. Is there a way to undo my action?

    thanks!

    Rquillian (talk) 13:49, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Rquillian, if you'd like your IP address hidden from the edit history, you can contact WP:OVERSIGHT via one of the methods mentioned on that page. That's as much as can be done. 57.140.16.8 (talk) 15:56, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

All my edits are being reverting by the same two users

    [edit]

As above really. It’s becoming really annoying as you can imagine. They seem to be saying they think I am another user and that’s why they are reverting my edits apparently. How do I ask for moderator intervention to put a stop to them please? Thanks. 2.96.227.72 (talk) 15:16, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WP:BE by persistent sockpuppet. Always claims to be innocent of why he/she is getting reverted - see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Politialguru 10mmsocket (talk) 15:18, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do not understand why the above user and his friend are that targeting me, given I am not the user they are linking to. I will no longer engage with them. Please could this persisting reverting of my edits be looked at by moderators? I don’t want the users targeting me banned, but they do need to be stopped from behaving like this. Thanks again. 2.96.227.72 (talk) 15:24, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Table moved to bottom of the page

    [edit]

Hi, I was updating the past seasons table under the past seasons tab on the Risborough Rangers FC page. Even though the editing says that the table is under the past seasons tab, when published it isn't so gets moved to the bottom of the page. I am unable to work out what I've done to make this happen. The message says that you haven't given a title for the website. Going to http://billwall.phpwebhosting.com/articles/Chess%20players%20who%20died%20young.htm, I can see that there is no obvious title: I suppose the title is "Chess players who died young". But I see absolutely no reason to regard that as a reliable source, and so it should not be cited at all, for any article. ColinFine (talk) 20:58, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The title of the page is "Chess players who died young", but the name of the site is Bill Wall's Chess Page (one can often determine the name of a site by going to what's before the first backslash after http:// in the page's URL—in this case, http://billwall.phpwebhosting.com). I agree, though, that it doesn't appear to be a reliable source per WP:RSSELF. Deor (talk) 23:22, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to see the "Compare versions" view in the editor before submitting?

    [edit]

With long articles with detail-oriented content (tables of data that are easier to download, edit locally, then re-upload), I find I'm submitting, checking revision changes, then going back to correct punctuation and spelling changes. Is there a way to see the version comparison view on my pending submission? Anonymouse914 (talk) 19:04, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anonymouse914, if you're using the source editor, you should see a "Show changes" button. If you're using the visual editor, after hitting "Publish changes..." a new dialogue will pop up with a "Review your changes" button. – macaddct1984 (talk | contribs) 20:39, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Problem with search function

    [edit]

When I entered the term "rutamarin" in the "Search Wikipedia" box, the search function returned at least 500 hits, first stating that no page for this term exists. The first hit is legitimate, but all the remaining hits are to the same text, and that text doesn't appear in any of the referenced pages (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=rutamarin&title=Special%3ASearch&ns0=1). My request is that this search be modified so that only the first hit occurs, and with none of the remaining hits being returned. As a pure guess, I suspect that this result is produced by a bug in the search function which may well cause inappropriate results to be returned from searches of other terms, possibly ones like "rutamarin" that lack their own article pages. Mitality (talk) 19:34, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mitality: The term really is on all those pages. It is inside the "TRP channel modulators" box at the bottom of the page. This box is collapsed by default. The search function cannot know how useful/not useful this is to any particular user. -Arch dude (talk) 19:46, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your perfect and super-fast reply! Remarkably, rutamarin is given as BOTH a TRP M activator AND blocker! Pleiotropy? Experimental error? Seems as though rutamarin is just begging to have an article created for it. Mitality (talk) 20:43, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mitality: You can omit the template-generated results with the search insource:rutamarin which finds four articles. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:21, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    [edit]

I posted on a talk page: "Who decided to call it the 'Latvian Hockey Higher League'?" I had concluded that in English the league should referred to as the "Latvian Premier League". Seems no one is coming to talk. Low readership, I think. What to do? Try to contact one of the very few recent editors to discuss the title change? Or just go ahead and make the change? KingMidasTheSecond (talk) 06:30, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@KingMidasTheSecond if an article talk page isn't getting much attention, you could also try asking on the talk pages for the WikiProjects listed at the top, in this case WT:LATVIA and WT:HOCKEY. ClaudineChionh (she/her · talk · contribs · email) 06:39, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User:Dukurs moved it to its current name in 2016 and was still active as of just a few days ago. Maybe one of them will comment now that they have been pinged here. Tnobermeyer Wikipedia is not the place for you to advocate for changes to how the State of Alaska selects its judges. If you represent a group advocating for that, that needs to be disclosed, please see conflict of interest. If you want to summarize what independent reliable sources say about how Alaska is considering changing how it selects its judges, that's a different matter, but that's not what you are doing. Please refer to the conflict of interest policy for information on best practices when contributing about a topic for which you have a conflict of interest. 331dot (talk) 07:33, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Could I please have help

    [edit]

Could someone please help me move my article to the mainspace from draft, as I am having a lot of trouble doing so.

My article is called The_Desert_Song_(Max_Liebman_Presents), but has the word 'Draft' at the beginning of the name of the article. I am not able to move the article because the name for the article remains the same (even with the extra word 'Draft').

I would very much appreciate any help with this. Thank you. Figaro (talk)

Figaro, you need to submit Draft:The Desert Song (Max Liebman Presents) as a candidate for promotion to article status. However, there's no point doing so any time soon, as the draft says very little that appears to be reliably sourced. (Three sources are specified -- although just what each is referencing is unclear. I didn't click on any of the three, but I know that IMDb is unacceptable, and the other two look very dubious.) Do you really have no better sources? -- Hoary (talk) 08:27, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
. . . but when you think it's time to submit the draft for promotion, add {{subst:submit}} at the top. -- Hoary (talk) 09:12, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    VP Harris

    [edit]

Why is Kamala Harris identified as an African American at Wikipedia? Her ancestral lines have no people in Africa. 166.113.117.93 (talk) 19:33, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Talk:Kamala Harris which has a FAQ at the top that will answer your question. In short, Jamaicans are from Africa. 331dot (talk) 19:35, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
331dot (talk · contribs) I am, of course, aware that I'm talking to a highly experienced and knowledgeable Wikipedian, here. But I suggest to you that overly-broad statements like "In short, Jamaicans are from Africa," is more than a little TOO "in short" to be helpful, or even to lend credibility--because some people know that it's not 100% true. I do realize that the woman in question (pardon me, for personal reasons, I prefer to avoid speaking or writing her name--nothing to do with the question here) does have origins in Africa, through her Jamaican father. I also realize that the indigenous Arawakan people are gone from Jamaica. But first, remember that Jamaica was settled by Spanish, and then English settlers. OK, after several centuries, it's probably impossible to find a descendant of one of them who doesn't also have an ancestor of African descent. But far more recently, south Asian peoples have settled there. And there is a little-known community of German heritage; you'd be hard-put to find a member of that community who can actually speak German, but they still look like anyone from the Fatherland. Uporządnicki (talk) 14:18, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As this article makes clear, we are all "from Africa" if you go far enough back in our ancestry. That's not why Harris, or anyone else, is described as such in Wikipedia biographies. Rather, it is because that's what reliable sources say of her (and she says of herself). Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:30, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Second what Mike has said. If you think that the reliable sources have gotten it wrong, you need to take that up with them, not us.. 331dot (talk) 14:54, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Article dispute

    [edit]

A recent article I wrote that passed draft review and is now in the article space has been nominated for deletion. The article is All Saints Episcopal Church (Carmel-by-the-Sea, California). Looks like there are more delete votes than keep votes.

    • How do I prevent this article from deletion and open it up for further discussion?
    • If it deleted, how do I appeal the dicesion?
    • A third question is, why are there thousands of Category:Articles lacking sources that have been open for years when certain editors choose my article for deletion? Am I an easy target?

    Greg Henderson (talk) 20:02, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Greghenderson2006, this isn't about you, it's about the draft. And yes, I found the decision to !vote "delete" fairly easy. Most editors are here to help improve Wikipedia. The argument "I've found some poor articles on Wikipedia, so I'm justified in creating another equally poor article" does not go down well with us. Maproom (talk) 20:55, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I believe the artilce is well written with plenty of citations and do think it should be deleted. Rather, if we are here to make Wikipedia better, then the artilce should (a) be allowed to be updated; (b) or moved into draft to allow the creating editor to make the changes. I see too many editors quick to delete articles rather than work with the editor to improve it. Seems like it is easier for them to just delete it and move on. How would you feel if someone did this to you? Greg Henderson (talk) 21:06, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Articles may be improved while they're at AfD. If an editor is, for one reason or another, unable to improve the article directly, they're welcome to make suggestions on the article's talk page. As for me, I'm happy to fix minor defects in articles but I'm tired of "working with" the creators of seriously defective articles; rather, those creators should have done a conscientious job in the first place. -- Hoary (talk) 21:12, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Greghenderson2006, you prevent deletion by persuasively making policy-based arguments in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/All Saints Episcopal Church (Carmel-by-the-Sea, California). Deletion, or not, is already open for further discussion, at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/All Saints Episcopal Church (Carmel-by-the-Sea, California). If it is deleted and you can argue persuasively that the deletion was mistaken, you will be able to do so. (If you're thinking of attempting to overturn deletion just because you disagree with deletion, forget about it.) And, yes, other crap exists; perhaps you'd like to choose one or two examples and either (A) improve them so that they're no longer unreferenced crap or (B) nominate them for deletion. -- Hoary (talk) 21:07, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Finer grained difference.

    [edit]

When I do a diff between two versions of an article it shows me a word that changed, I'd like to see the changes at the letter/byte level. For example, if the difference between two versions of an article looks like a change from the Greek Letters Phi Beta Kappa to Phi Beta K, that would look exactly the same as if someone changed the Greek letters Phi Beta Kappa to Phi B Kappa. Different letters were changed, but the diff look exactly the same, simply highlighting the three letters. (I flipped a coin between asking here and asking at the Village Pump, so I won't take a "go to the Village Pump" as a bad result.)Naraht (talk) 21:04, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Naraht: Can you link a diff that shows the problem you are describing? RudolfRed (talk) 23:14, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The MediaWIki diff for [2] shows a change from OΚΕ to ΟΚΕ. One of the letters was changed from a Latin letter to a Greek letter but the diff doesn't show which one, or whether two or all three letters were changed. If you enable wikEdDiff at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets then you get an option to see an alternative diff (you can still see the MediaWiki diff). wikEdDiff shows that O was changed to Ο while ΚΕ was unchanged. I think it varies which diff is "best" but it's nice to have an alternative when the MediaWiki diff is "poor". Both diffs are correct. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:51, 6 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PrimeHunter Can you please point to which one it is in Gadgets? Is it "wikEdDiff: improved diff view between article versions (not needed if wikEd is used)" I have that checked already, how do I access the alternative? the Delta... thanx!!!!Naraht (talk) 00:26, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Those are not the only options. Wikipedia is written by volunteers who tend to write about things they are interested in and knows about. Nobody is assigned to write specific articles. The English Wikipedia has more editors from English speaking and Western countries than from Russia. The Russian Wikipedia is probably different. It's most likely that nobody with the right interest, knowledge and source access (may require you to know Russian) has written what you want, and nobody has decided against having it. "Main menu" does not follow down for me. I guess you refer to "Contents". It has a "hide" link which moves it to a clickable icon at top of the page. If you make an account (free and easy with no requirement to give an email address or any information) then you can choose another skin than the default Vector 2022 at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. All the other skins display the table of contents after the lead section as part of the article and not to the left. Skins also make other changes. I prefer Vector legacy. You can see an example here without an account: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia?useskin=vector. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:45, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see a "2023" line in Template:To USD round, which seems odd to me. (You'll need to "Edit (source)" to see the content - it normally shows only the documentation for a template).
It may be straightforward to add it, but I wouldn't try it myself. I suggest asking at Template talk:To USD round. ColinFine (talk) 09:50, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - have asked at Template talk:To USD round#Documentation for how to add new year? Chidgk1 (talk) 11:13, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to nominate an anniversary in Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries?

How to nominate an anniversary in Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries? AsteriodX (talk) 09:22, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

AsteriodX, there are instructions at Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries, starting with "How to contribute to the project". TSventon (talk) 09:59, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    [edit]

A new editor has added a substantial paragraph to the Quenya article (which is about one of Tolkien's constructed languages) on the matter of the copyright status of the language, and (less relevantly) of Tolkien's Tengwar script, one way that Quenya can be written (Latin script with diacritics is an alternative). I'd be inclined to delete the whole paragraph as basically off-topic for the article, both because Tengwar is a different article, and because it's not up to Wikipedia to discuss a language's copyright issues – after all, we don't want to fill thousands of articles (on books, films, you name it) with copyright discussions. Is it appropriate to have such a discussion in the Quenya article, and is there a statement of policy about this somewhere? Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:17, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Chiswick Chap: I've removed the latter quarter of it since it reads like instructions, effectively a manual and an illegal external link was added. It read like a copyright notice to instruct readers that it is copyright, don't touch, which is bollocks. That is not in our purview. scope_creepTalk 23:39, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Chiswick Chap: I see the editor has been blocked for 31 hours for being disruptive. The link he added makes me suspect he is a paid editor, sent in to instruct readers, what with copyright holder url embedded in the paragraph. I left a notice on his talk talk page and he got disruptive. Its the first time I've seen that kind of instruction to the reader (hands off its copyright) been left on Wikipedia. I suspect its not going to be the last. Really shabby behaviour. scope_creepTalk 01:32, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
His comments on the talk page were chaotic and aggressive, So it's all clearly inappropriate. Many thanks. Chiswick Chap (talk) 03:30, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance Needed with Draft Approval: Silent Hands Support Inc.

    [edit]

    Hi,

I have created a draft for an organization called "Silent Hands Support Inc." (Draft:Silent Hands Support Inc.). It is still in draft status, and I would like to understand how I can improve it to meet Wikipedia's guidelines and get it approved. The draft includes multiple reliable sources and detailed information about the organization. However, I am unsure if there are specific issues or improvements needed.

Here is the link to the draft: Draft:Silent Hands Support Inc.

Can someone please review the draft and provide feedback or guidance on what changes are necessary for approval?

    Thank you, 103.31.152.245 (talk) 13:35, 7 August 2024 (UTC)103.31.152.245 (talk) 13:27, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User:Farabikhanb Please ensure you are logged in when you contribute. The draft is unlikely to be accepted in its current form. Wikipedia is not interested in what organisations say about themselves in press releases. We want independent reliable sources to show the organisation is wikinotable. Also, you uploaded to Wikimedia Commons the logo of the organisation, saying it was your "own work". Is that really the case: did you personally create this logo and are now releasing its copyright worldwide to anyone to use for any purpose? Given that Silent Hands is registered in Australia, I'm surprised that none of the sources seem to be from there but that's a minor point. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:52, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Should I specify in a software infobox's "License" section if the software is not available to the public?

    [edit]

The article in question is about China Railway's Ticketing and Reservation System, which obviously isn't available to the public. Should this be specified in the infobox, as I did? Félix An (talk) 13:58, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It is purely editorial decision. It depends on whether this information is considered useful for readers. Ruslik_Zero 19:13, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Help for publishing a translation from PT-BR

    [edit]

    Hello!

This is my first contribution to En-Wiki and I got a bit confused because it is quite different from the PT-Wiki.

I translated a page (User:Maosone/CazeTV) from a PT page CazéTV. I'd like to ask for help for publishing it if you guys think it is interesting. Please, let me know if I made any major mistakes or if it needs any corrections so I can improve it. If not, should I take any measures to delete it or is it done automatically? I don't want to get in trouble or being blocked here. Maosone (talk) 19:57, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The article won't be deleted I think because it doesn't have "Draft:[insert title]". If it did, it would be deleted in about 6 months since the last edit was made to it (it is not deleted automatically, it is a manual process done by a person).
After reading your draft, it seems to meet notability guidelines from my point of view. Soafy234 (talk) 23:52, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Incorrect information

    [edit]

Hello, the height of my son is incorrect on wiki, he is a footballer and it says he is 6'1 when he is actually 6'5 this is having a detrimental affect on his career as he appears smaller than he actually is - how can this be changed ? Thanks 155.190.60.28 (talk) 12:55, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

IP editor: Please see this advice for article subjects. Wikipedia is based on summarizing what reliable sources say, so one way forward is to have such a source publish the correct information. For some details, publication on a person's website, or that of his club would suffice: see WP:ABOUTSELF. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:08, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Meanwhile another editor has reverted your edit to Ben Hockenhull, as we do not want information in articles that contradicts the cited source. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:17, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Image displaying weird

    [edit]

Does anyone know what is going on with the image at Dillon Mitchell? When I go to the file page, it doesn't even look like that. Thanks, ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 13:37, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The original uploader did a poor cropping. It needs to be reverted and re-cropped. See File:2023, 17, Dillon Mitchell.jpg on Commons. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:45, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think the uploader made a good cropping but MediaWiki still shows the old version at some resolutions, strecthed to the height-width ratio of the new version. That sometimes happens and is hard to fix. Compare these:
    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/89/2023%2C_17%2C_Dillon_Mitchell.jpg/90px-2023%2C_17%2C_Dillon_Mitchell.jpg
    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/89/2023%2C_17%2C_Dillon_Mitchell.jpg/91px-2023%2C_17%2C_Dillon_Mitchell.jpg
The only difference is supposed to be scaling the same image to width 91 px instead of 90 px, but I currently see the old uncropped version at 90px and the new tall cropped version at 91px. commons:File:2023, 17, Dillon Mitchell.jpg#filehistory shows the old 90 px image but stretched to the height-width ratio of the new 91px image. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:35, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For anyone else looking at this, I went ahead and uploaded a new version (File:2023, 17, Dillon Mitchell (cropped).jpg). If you try to put the old version (File:2023, 17, Dillon Mitchell.jpg) in the infobox it still looks weird. Thanks, ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 14:47, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It looks weird at the default infobox size 220px where the old file version is strecthed to the new height-width ratio. It looks normal with image_size = 221px. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:53, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Family tree chart and things

    [edit]

I have been previously instructed to utilise services such as Miraheze in order to put random things on rather than creating a user sandbox subpage. However, Miraheze does not allow access to the Wikipedia version of MediaWiki, which is the main reason I wanted to make a subpage. I had intentions of creating Wikipedia-style tree-charts or tree-lists for my fictional stories, as they have aesthetic appeal. Is there a place where I can do this? Blocky44 (talk · contributions · sandbox) 16:13, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know the answer for sure, @Blocky44, but my guess is that you are trying to use templates (and possibly modules) that are specific to Wikipedia. If that is so, I doubt if you'll find another Mediawiki installation which will have them. It is possible that you can copy these across to another Mediawiki instance, unless they use underlying facilities that are turned on in Wikipedia and not in that other Mediawiki server (I don't know how likely that is). If that is the case, I suspect the only thing you are going to be able to do is to set up your own Mediawiki server. ColinFine (talk) 16:30, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Is your plan to take a screenshot and publish it somewhere else together with your story? You could preview code here and only save it elsewhere like on your own computer. Or you could try to copy the used templates to Miraheze. I don't know their rules but if you preview a page here then you can see a list of used templates at "Templates used in this preview" at the bottom of the window. You can also use Special:ExpandTemplates to see the code produced after all templates are called. This code can be copied to other MediaWiki installations without the used templates. See Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content if you copy from Wikipedia. The rendering of some things rely on more than the code, e.g. an installed extension, or styling in MediaWiki:Common.css.
